Kylemore Abbey/Connemara Day Tour

Kylemore Abbey/Connemara Day Tour

It’s said that when you visit Connemara you “Experience the real Beauty of Ireland”!
Enjoy this magical Day Tour through the unspoilt natural landscape of Connemara – a place of contrasts, colours, wilderness and warm welcomes on the west coast of Ireland – From the bogs and lakes of the Gaelic speaking South Connemara to the mountain vistas of North and West Connemara, the diversity of the landscape has to be seen to be believed – The remoteness only adds to its stark beauty.

This tour features a visit to the 19thC Kylemore Abbey & Victorian Walled Garden, during which you will have time to experience the famous Abbey, Neo-Gothic Cathedral, Walled Garden, Mausoleum, Tea Rooms and Gift Shop. You will also learn the history of the Abbey and the Benedictine Community, who are still in residence here.
This is certainly one of Ireland’s most romantic buildings and was originally built as a Castle in 1867 as a special gift from Mitchell Henry to his wife Margaret – Learn tales of tragedy, romance, engineering initiatives and royal visits.

Along the way, you will visit Clifden Town and the famous “Monument”, which commemorates the town’s founder, John D’Arcy (1785-1839). He was the head of the family which ruled over this area at the turn of the 19thC.
Various examples of graffiti dating from 1871 can be found etched into the monument and it’s location, on the peak of a hill, provides wonderful views and is a magnificent vantage point to photograph Clifden, with it’s 2 church spires and perfect Twelve Pins backdrop!

On then past the ruins of Clifden Castle (built in1818) to the nearby Sky Road Viewing Point for a breathtaking and dramatic experience of the west coast of Ireland and continue on the Wild Atlantic Way to Kylemore Abbey for our first main stop of the day !
Following lunch, we’ll meander through the Lough Inagh Valley, surrounded by the majestic Twelve Pins(or Bens) on one side and the Maumturks mountain range on the other and travel on past The Connemara Giant for a photostop at The Quiet Man Bridge, made famous in the 1950’s classic film “The Quiet Man”, directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara & Barry Fitzgerald.

Then it’s on to meet Keith and family at Glengowla Mines for a guided underground tour of Ireland’s first ‘show mine’ – This Silver and Lead Mine was abandoned in 1865 and is a unique reminder of the 19thC methods of ore extraction and processing.
Visit the Museum – Hear the story of Bogs in Ireland – Enjoy Turf Cutting & Sheep Herding Demonstations – Learn of the world’s earthquake activity, which is recorded here at their seismography station.

This might just be a Day Trip you will never forget !
